Something I said elsewhere earlier today

Public

A variant thereof, anyway. To my liberal friends, and indeed to anyone else who feels unhappy about what happened in the US on Tuesday, I would say this:

Don't tell voters how they made things worse this time. Show them how they can make things better next time.I've seen several people make a very good point in the last few days: that rage ( Read more... )

Indeed, there isn't really much other option, though I fear we will see a spike in the number of suicides in vulnerable groups like GLBT teens. (Already, help hotline calls are being made to organisations like The Trevor Project at an unprecedented level)

It's been pointed out that if Trump gets impeached, his replacement as President would be Mike Pence. I cannot see much way in which a Pence administration would be better from a liberal point of view, though as far as I know he's not personally abusive to women. (Actually, scratch that; I've just remembered his hardline anti-abortion stance.)

I think the liberal side also needs to pick its battles carefully. Going for everything at once isn't going to work as people will be spread too thin. For example, in 2018 I suspect the House will be a more realistic target than the Senate, given the seats that are up in two years' time.

It will be interesting, in an "interesting times" way, to see how Trump's core backers react when he breaks campaign promises -- something he must do, since some of them are impossible and some contradict others.
