Oldham West and Royton: LAB HOLD

The result is in from the Oldham West and Royton by-election, the first to be held since the election and the first since Jeremy Corbyn became Labour leader. Turnout has been lowish at around 40%, which is hardly surprising for a December poll, but the result is pretty clear:

Jim McMahon (Labour Co-op) ...... 17,209 (62.1%)

I want to know about Sir Oink-A-Lot. And when are you going to stand as pony candidate for the Friendship party?

I'm dismayed that UKIP came so high, although I'm no longer as worried as I was before the last general election.

I'm assuming that Sir Oink-A-Lot's name is a reference to a certain Cameron-related story, though for all I know he's been called that for 20 years!

And when are you going to stand as pony candidate for the Friendship party?

I'm not sure friendship and electoral politics are all that compatible! Ponvyville is in theory overseen by Mayor Mare (oh yes) but is really a sort of freewheeling absolute oligarchy. One or two people have written fairly funny Yes, Minister crossover fanfics. =:)

I'm dismayed that UKIP came so high, although I'm no longer as worried as I was before the last general election.

I'm actually quite pleased by that result. Of course I'd rather their vote had been much lower (and the Lib Dem/Green vote higher) but 23% is a lot less than Farage was claiming they'd get.

Heh, I did not know about Mayor Mare! And I love the idea of Yes, Minister crossovers, even though I don't know enough about the MLP universe to get anything out of it myself.

Always the problem with crossovers, of course. I've been vaguely thinking about a Watership Down pony crossover for ages, but the potential audience would be pretty small.
