So, the Queen has become the longest-reigning British monarch of all time. As most of you will know, I'm a moderate royalist -- which is to say, I don't think the sky would fall in if the UK were to change to a non-hereditary head of state, but I tend to feel the Queen is a better symbol and figurehead than any of the possible alternatives ( Read more... )

Same here, but one thing I doubt Charles will be king for one reason really. He's with a divorcee the last time that happened the ahem king had to abdicate after all can't have the head of the church of england being a naughty boy!

I used to be quite a Royalist, but.. I've sort of drifted more socialist over time. I'm fine with maintaining the monarchy, but admittedly, more on pragmatic grounds of tourism benefits than constitutional utility - where there would indeed be a role, such as snubbing heinous legislation. But as is.. it's all rather pointless, and quite unfathomably expensive.

At least Duchy molasses ham at Waitrose is excellent. Maybe we should be due an annual allowance free? =:9

£36 million a year according to the government; £334 million a year according to Republic. Even at the higher cost, I'm not really convinced that it would be any cheaper to change the constitution (such as it is) over to a republic. I'd be open to a more Scandinavian-style royal family, though.
