With nods to Sabatoa.

So the movie I saw last week was Cashback; sorta like a dirtier, British, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - sci-fi but not really sci-fi.
  • Fellas, there are lots of (tasteful) nude girlies throughout the film.
  • Ladies, it's a love story.
Something for all, really.

The story's about this guy that's got insomnia but finds he can ( Read more... )

Such a debate, the whole atomic thing. I've heard some argue that the dropping of those bombs were actually merciful. That more Japanese and Americans would have died under the usual carpet bombing and subsequent invasion. I dunno. I'm not pushing for one thing or another. What happened, happened and the help the Japanese got from the US afterwards has helped them become a technological juggernaut and a wealthy people. I think at least..

What did you think of the movie? I'm glad you checked it out.

You're right about the debate, I do think that's something that's not so easily answered. We are talking about atomic bombs on a civilian population. Still, knowing what I do about the Japanese culture, they're a seriously committed people with a complementing mindset. It's difficult.

I loved the movie; you were the first person who mentioned it and then some others did so I rented a copy and watched it. Very good.

I see that you liked The Blind Side too, huh?

Yeah and the kicker is that they would have been bombed into oblivion whether or not atomic weapons were used.

More people were killed in the Tokyo firebombing in March 1945 than in Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

I think the point was "hey. we can do this to you with one plane, one bomb. Imagine what a fleet of bombers can do."

As for Cashback, very happy to hear you liked it. I liked Blind Side too. It was rough seeing this kid, a cast away. Someone that just needed someone to love him. Watching him grow and blossom was touching. I may or may not have cried. lol

I saw Cashback as the original 'short' and I thought it was much better than the elongated movie - have you seen the short?

I did like the fact that he could (or so he thought) slow down time! :)

Wait, where can I find the short?! That's awesome, I did not know that.

I think that if I could have any power, it would be the ability to control time.

Oh gosh, I don't remember if it's still up on that movie community or not - I saw it AGES ago, I think I was still in college...

I'll look for a link somewhere and post it. :)

Oh hey, girlfriend and I watched that last year. Glad I know someone else who has seen it now.

But yeah, I remember when my sister first gave me a book on The Rape of Nanking to read, and I was completely disgusted. But just as people say they hate the Nazi party rather than "The Germans" for the Holocaust, I'd say hate those Japanese soldiers, not the Japanese themselves (though I'm not saying I think you do =] just leaving it there for, perhaps any people similar to your misinformed friend). I'm pretty sure that any of the men who committed such acts are at least dead today, thankfully. Still, evil's always gotta be someplace, yeah?

I'm impressed that you read that book; it's quite a weighty book. I couldn't finish it myself - I found it too disgusting and sad.

I met the author; she was super nice. I think the writing of the book had a lot to do with her eventual suicide. The evil things that people do last a lot longer than the people that do them. Luckily, the same is true of the good that people do.

Man, you've gotta give me more impetus than "it's a love story." Romance entertainment always leaves me feeling disgusted and insulted.

Re: your friend, Dude. Never bring up WWII, Nazis, or Showa Japan. The internet rule is true. You can't win. Even if you have facts and citations and quotes and statistics, no one ever wins those arguments. I had to bring up Showa Japan in my thesis. It will be my downfall.
