I hope I'm reading this right and I'm sorry about HEI. I lurk mostly because you are one of the best writers I know but I never have anything to contribute.
It's like that sometimes when we meet old friends - I think it's both parties preconceived notions about each other (lingering from the past, probably) that makes [understandable] conversation sometimes difficult...
J often says he's only responsible for transmission, not reception, but I think that's selling the communcation short. You still have to know if your conversation partner is recieving in English or Martian, thank you.
I agree with you completely; I think I saw the world as J saw it for years. But I think that it's the speaker's responsibility to make him/herself understood properly.
