German president Christian Wulff awarded the German national team the Silver Bayleaf for their World Cup performances.
German Bundespraesident Christian Wulff spoke of the ability of the German national football team to inspire as he awarded them the Silver Bayleaf (Silbern Lorbeerblatt) for their performances at the World Cup, which took them to the semi-finals.
"Who would have guessed 20 years ago the make-up of our national team. Among the players we have an Arne, a Thomas, a Hans-Joerg - and a Jerome, a Sami, a Mesut and a Miroslav. And this colourful team in South Africa has inspired us all," Wulff said in his speech.
"Today, I am able to award the Silbern Lorbeerblatt, the award presented by our state for outstanding athletic achievements, to the German World Cup squad."
"You have all made us so proud in South Africa. I hope dearly that this team will continue to play so ethusiastically and that it will be a role model and a true reflection of our society."
