OOC: For friending purposes

Nov 14, 2012 16:58

So with the new townies today, I remembered that if you hover over the little person icon in a journal name (depending, I suppose, on your settings/browser/computer set up/etc) it pops up a little bubble with a nice, easy, non-new-page-opening friending link. Since I find this way easier to deal with than lots of clicking, I put together an as-up- ( Read more... )

It's actually mostly a matter of find-and-replace (oh find-and-replace, you're my best friend!), but thank you.

D'aww, shucks.

Fun fact! There are, like, somewhere in the order of 250 active journals in this game! I may have at one point in this process employed a spreadsheet (oh spreadsheets, you're my second best friend after find-and-replace).

No problem! Hopefully it'll make some of the mass friending effort easier.

Great idea! (And one I wasn't likely to think of because I have the hover menu turned off on my journals.) We'll likely end up switching the master friending list around to that display format. It won't add them to groups, but that can be done en masse afterwards on the Edit Groups page.

For those who have the hover menu turned off and thus don't see any pop-ups, it's not dependent on your journal style; it's just a yes/no option that you can set in the admin console.

To turn it on: set opt_ctxpopup Y
To turn it off: set opt_ctxpopup N

That's why I made sure to note that it dependent on other factors -- I seem to remember someone even mentioning turning off the pop ups once upon a time.

I figured in the wake of the anxiety the change had instilled in folks, a few options would be good!

ETA I added the info about how to turn on and off the pop-ups at the admin console to the post.

This reminds me: is there an easy way to handle adding people to groups, or do we just have to hop down the line and try to remember who goes where?

... No chance the admin console still lets you sort current friends into groups, is there?

Nope. :-/ Adding people to groups via the admin console is a modifier at the end of "friend add" lines, and that whole command is disabled for non-staff users.

Basically the only way to add people to groups in bulk is to use the Edit Groups page. (Where you create the students, townies, etc. groups in the first place.) That page lets you go down the list of friends and ctrl+click names, then transfer all those highlighted names into a group at once.

So with the master friending list (which is separated out into which group they go into, then laid out in alpha order by username within each section) open in another window, you can alt+tab back and forth to highlight just the students, just the townies, etc. It's not perfect, but slightly better than having to sort usernames into groups from memory.
