procrastination vacation

yesterday was spent incognito keeping rebeccaK company...in aid of a friend on the blind jdate from hell. we staked out one of those you-paint-it-yourself pottery places in cambridge as backup for a friend who might need a quick escape from a dumb boy. so, improv-ing and painting drag snow(wo)men salt & pepper shakers ensued. oh, and i bought a faux (blue) beast stole i'm wearing in ze be-low photo.

one of these days i'm going to realize how lucky i've been to be in boston with many fine, worthy distractions from finals. o the adventures to be had. where else are the dresden dolls so accessible?! i hadn't seen them since last halloween, but to-day i got gussied in my blue finest (finery) and saw their Brechtian theatrical punk musical franken-creation, The Onion Cellar at the ART. with laura/masslibrulgirl. they turned the place into a true cabaret.

we sat at little candle-lit tables, the lighting was elaborate and gorgeous. a sea of naked bulbs and chandeliers. though the wait staff looked a bit clumsy punked & dolled up. charming! but, i am not complaining about the also-forced, yet delicious effect of Amanda & Brian's stage-doubles. four dolls for the ogling! it made me realize how unreproducable their personae and energy are. their doubles performed with them, so it was great and surreal. the show was everything they try to achieve at their regular concerts + brigadiers, but with all the planning and theatricality inherent to their act ~ achieved in tenfold. or somesuch. usually they're the autonomous cabaret unit to any venue they play, but here they had the whole space to match them, designed and performing around them, from ushers to seating to installed bar and fan-memorabilia wall...it was incredibly elaborate.

afterwards i took >> laura's photo with them. and we all chatted and they signed our playbills. i told them i'd met them (a hairstyle ago) when they were interviewed on the air at BrU (photo!), and i reminded Amanda how she'd tried to auction off her menstrual'd undies to the tenth caller. hee. not their most gregarious post-show encounter, so i didn't ask for a picture. but whatever. the show really envigorated me. and i'm glad i am so full of inner spark and encouragement from the performance and not pining over some imagined connection to them as the actors and musicians behind it. does this mean i'm growing up somehow? blah. i'm just glad they're doing what they love. an integral part of boston culture. anyway, it was a good day. full of used books and stationary store-ing, too. thanks for a wonderful amble laura. i guess i'm done rambling aboot that.

i've watched 'little miss sunshine' & 'stranger than fiction' this weekend courtesy of yourtvlinks.com. speaking of the last dolls show i saw, how about DeVotchka's contribution to 'sunshine's' soundtrack?! wow. anyway. both movies made me feel pretty grand. which is rare for me. ending a film and feeling like i don't have to think it to a happy closure-place in my head. i don't know if this is a sign of "good" moviemaking or not, actually...but now it's work time.

cause celebre, adventures, pictures
