Natalie was present, dressed for the occasion, with her hair curled and her makeup immaculate. A little bit glamorous but not so much as to threaten her credibility. She was getting quite good at this, both presenting herself as well as working the room.
She had a glass in her hand, but was only taking a sip here and there.

"With all the votes tallied," the woman on-screen said, "Peter Wiggin wins, with 60% of the vote. I repeat: Peter Wiggin is our new Hegemon, as ratified by the majority of world governments."
Or what governments still paid lipservice to the Hegemonial project, Peter didn't say.
Around him, everyone burst out into applause, hugs and cheers. The balloons came down. More booze was handed out.

Natalie knew this was more akin to getting to the starting line rather than the finish line, and that most of the work was ahead. But still. She found herself smiling kind of a lot once the results came in.
And she was still smiling when she made her way over to Peter, waiting patiently to get past any congratulators before her (not to mention receiving a few of her own), and batting an errant balloon away on her way.

Peter was busy shaking hands with his professional-hand-shaker face on.
When he finally caught Natalie's eye, there was a brief gleam of something genuine, which vanished as quickly as it had appeared. "Well, looks like we did it."

"So it does, Mr. Hegemon," Natalie nodded. Her smile didn't go anywhere, although she tempered it some. "Unless the misreading of the century just happened."
Peter's SpeechlockesthewayDecember 20 2013, 10:25:04 UTC
Peter got on stage shortly after the declaration. After months of practice on the road, his ability to speech in public had greatly improved. He had started to become charismatic, though not in the warm, people-pleasing fashion of the world's most beloved leaders.
Rather, there was a certainty to him: he would steer this ship right, and he was humble before the people who had elected him.
"And as my first official act," he finished, "I would like to reconfirm the appointment of Polemarch Chamrajnagar. Long may he keep us safe from the dangers of cold, dark space."
