In your boredom maybe you could consider your position in life as one of the more important people in America.

I'm getting to know some aspiring journalists in New Orleans and they are entirely baffled by the print-to-online jump. They want to start an alternative newspaper (and matching website, naturally), but they are desperately at the mercy of The Men Who Make Websites. Do you freelance ever? It's certainly one way to avoid evil overlords.
