Well! I should be revising, but instead I accidentally wrote this. I'm not sure why, or what I wanted to say with it, but I just - I don't know. The finale of Ashes to Ashes left me with a lot of thoughts and questions and musings and I just needed to get them down, so.

This is my head!canon. Beautifully done:

Every now and then, everything is ripped down and put back together again and this is the way the world doesn’t end.

Pub?

Pub.

The series finale was pretty much the saddest thing ever, and this is like, how episode 9 would have gone, to a tee. Heartbreaking. Gene ♥

<3 I'm so glad this worked for you, especially the ending; I've been rewatching LoM lately (by which I mean "forcing it upon beloved flatmate", obvs) and I adored the echoing of the "pub" exchange in A2A, because it's just - charming.

Cheers, lovely. x

This was very effective. The ending section was just beautiful.

Thank you! I'm not sure what effect I was trying to evoke really (the whole fic was very "okay 3am rambling GO" and I was slightly drunk at the time to boot), but I'm glad it did SOMETHING. <333

So. This feels like the part of the finale that was missing for me last night, and I feel like you've answered all the questions I've been asking. This actually feels like closure? As I'm a lot more at peace with the finale for having read your fic. It's a game-changer ♥

THIS COMMENT MADE ME HAPPIER THAN A HAPPY THING. I can't imagine being able to get closure for such a gigantic/insane serious without a bit of fic, I've no idea how non-fandom people do it. well by being less madly emotionally invested I guess errrr

Anyway - thank you thank you thank you <333

Agh god Loz, you bring the pain, again. But in a good way - I think you just captured all the things I really liked about the ending.

"Okay," said the man. "All right. Surprise me. What year is it supposed to be?"

Gene stared levelly back at him and gave the question due consideration. "Word in your shell-like, pal," he said.

Fuck I love this bit.

HOORAY. yes, there were lots of things I adored about the ending and thought were so interesting that I just wanted to, you know...play with them. They made some very brave (and insane) decisions, didn't they? Overall I've decided I deffo enjoyed it, anyway, even though Sam Tyler didn't step out of the pub at the end and Gene didn't run towards him in slow-mo and fade to black &c.

In conclusion: cheers darlin' x

Or, at the very least, Alex pulling up a stool next to Sam at the bar. Ah well.

Also, realised the bit I chose to point out was pretty vague, just that it makes you think of how Gene dealt with Sam's mental - if you know Gene's sort of semi-aware that Sam's onto something, then it makes all the times Gene distracts him with a case or covers up for him make a lot of sense.

They kind of went the Jacob's Ladder route - which I think was a popular theory. I'm kind of maxed out at the moment with Heaven Hell Purgatory devils versus angels stuff, but I was so pleasantly surprised that it was a solid, decent ending and the that it made my heart ache for all of them that much.
