Spiderman as adopted child in Avengers fic - someone please explain

Jul 28, 2013 15:48

So, I've noticed Spiderman appearing a lot recently as 'random adopted child #1', and I hadn't watched the film so I made assumptions about how the newest set of films had treated his home life. I've not read any of these fics because Peter Parker has never really interested me (and I hated the last set of films, like... really hated ( Read more... )

Oh, the Superfamily trope. I don't think anyone really knows where it really came from? It just popped up on tumblr one day, and then it was just EVERYWHERE. http://fanlore.org/wiki/Domestic_Avengers

Some fans are kind of appalled (because Peter's past is so important to his character, and how can you erase Uncle Ben), but it seems to persist regardless.

So. it's a tumblr phenomenon, basically.

Damn, I was hoping for some rationale for it. I hate writing to really bad tropes (and I'm with those who are apalled - it doesn't work!).

But I have so much of this fic written... Help me Mizzy, what do I do?

Write it anyway! I am semi appalled but usually I'll still read it anyway because they're usually relentlessly cute, so. If you're super worried, post with a sock.

OR, rewrite so it is more sensitive to the original material. Uncle Ben and Aunt May still exist, but aren't healthy enough to adopt Peter? Is there space for that?

Alternatively, any chance one of Garfield's other characters would work? A visual gag on him looking like Peter Parker? ("Boy A" has him playing Eric, a kid who did something horrific and then struggled to rehabilitate after prison.)

Wow, that trailer looks traumatising. *wibbles* I'll add it to my watch list

I'll finish it up and then see if it needs pulling apart a bit. I've been tempted to move it so they're fostering, rather than adoption, to give space for 'and then he goes back to living with...' but the complications are just so... complicated. XD

PS: a sock?
