Okay, book rec time.

The other day at work, I stumbled across Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel. It's Time Magazine's #1 book of the year, so I'd heard of it, but honestly my first reaction was, "A graphic novel/memoir about a butch lesbian whose father kills himself? Um no thanks." But I picked it up, read the first page, and proceeded to nearly ( Read more... )

Huh, as Time's No. 1 book of the year it seems odd that I have never even heard of it. I am still skeptical though -suicide, homosexuality, pedophilia and family dysfunction? This seems like the perfect recipe for a seriously depressing saga in colorless pictures.

Can I just say, I love that after writing basically a review of the book that included a lot of words most people can't even spell, you followed up by calling it "un-depress-y." :)

If you enjoyed the book, you should check out the comic Dykes to Watch Out For. I believe that Fun Home is the back story of the comics main character, and I've really enjoyed the comic. I want to say there are something like 10-12 volumes out, but you should be able to pick any one up and enjoy it. :)

I've heard of the comic and knew they were by the same author, I just happened to run across this book first. I may see if the comic is in stock at work.

And somehow I figured you would know this book/story/writer. :-)

Yeah, well....

I actually haven't gotten my hands on the book yet, but I'm looking forward to grabbing it when I have the time/money.

Hey,

queenleigh and I weren't able to update for Saturday and Sunday (femslash-today) respectively. I was wondering if we could do a joint update and I email you my part of the week?

Thing is, I can only do this tonight (that's 2pm UTC, I think? I'm on UTC 0800) as work and school has me swamped. You can reach me through email: frogfrizz at yahoo.com and if you're willing, I can send you the links later tonight. Truly sorry for the inconvenience!
