Vegan Jerky

OK, I don't really understand jerky, and I never understood vegans, but vegan jerky is just a ridiculous contradiction.

But I just picked up some Tasty Eats Teriyaki Soy Jerky and it's pretty damn good. Who knew?

Where'd you get it? Whole Foods?

I didn't like Tofurkey Jerky.

Yeah, just hanging at the checkout along with the other froo-froo snacks.

I read "vegan jerky" and thought hey, that's great, somebody finally found a use for those people. And why stop there?
  • render the excess fat to make vegan soap and vegan candles
  • boil the bones to make vegan gelatin
  • tan the hides to make vegan leather...

Jerky is one of those things whice arose out of dire necessity, and which no one in their right mind would have thought of otherwise.

I would take it as read that the history of the Oregon Trail wasn't a big part of the British education system. You may or may not have gotten the short version. At any rate, both the historical import and the taste for heavily-seasoned, bone-dried meats, stems from a huge mass-migration starting in about 1816 and running full-tilt until the dawn of the 20th century.

But enough history lesson. Jerky as a whole is deeply ingrained in the culture of the American west, so yes, even vegans crave it.

Besides, almost anything tastes good with a little garlic and soy sauce (or at least can be made to taste like garlic and soy sauce).
