Jerky is one of those things whice arose out of dire necessity, and which no one in their right mind would have thought of otherwise.
I would take it as read that the history of the Oregon Trail wasn't a big part of the British education system. You may or may not have gotten the short version. At any rate, both the historical import and the taste for heavily-seasoned, bone-dried meats, stems from a huge mass-migration starting in about 1816 and running full-tilt until the dawn of the 20th century.
But enough history lesson. Jerky as a whole is deeply ingrained in the culture of the American west, so yes, even vegans crave it.
Besides, almost anything tastes good with a little garlic and soy sauce (or at least can be made to taste like garlic and soy sauce).
