Absolutely gorgeous.

I especially love this line: He is no prince, so he waits patiently for them to awake. Very nicely done :D The same goes for the other references too (and there are probably a load I'm missing). This is such a nicely woven story, and the kind of hearty, satisfying prose I wish people wrote more of :D

Thank you! This is the culmination of my gender and fairytales module, which left me with a lot of residual 'wait, what? He doesn't even wait for her to wake up?? That's really creepy!' I had a huge amount of fun writing it, and made sure it was, at least in part, something which would sound good read alout. I'm so happy you enjoyed it :D

Mind if I link to this? There are a fair few people on my fList who love dark fairytales of this type and I think they'd enjoy it too :)

LOL, yes, necrophiliac prince was a bit of a WTF moment when I first read about him! It was like wow, no wonder Disney translated that as a kiss... Although the idea of just kissing the (presumed) corpse of a stranger is in itself a little odd. And now my brain's gone off on one about how this is a little like Orthodox icon veneration (with the kissing of the relic or icon, all that emphasis on the tactile). Oh dear.

I'd be honoured if you did!

Fairytales are full of people humping dead/asleep people. That came as a terrible shock to me. And I would read that icon/princess book. Oooh, and then there are the undertones of the saints with the non-decomposing corpses...

This is really powerful, especially this bit:

No princess has a mother, not if she is to sew a nettle shirt or make a woman wear burning shoes and dance or wait in pain and hunger but with unshakeable faith or throw a frog at a wall, for what girl with a mother could do that?

Because fuck, for something read to tiny children, fairytales are CREEPY.

Thank you! Have you ever read Bruno Bettelheim or Jack Zipes? They say some really cool stuff about fairytales, and their place in the development of children. I spent a module at undergrad reading them, it was amazing fun. This fic's the culmination of a few years of thought!

Thank you thank you thank you! I do do it sometimes- not wearing shoes is one of my favourite things- it hurts sometimes, sometimes it's cold, sometimes dirty, but it connects you with the ground in the wonderful way. I'm glad you liked the wolves bit. I think what I was aiming at in the whole fic was a fairytale without enchantment. And I had way too much fun writing this, it wassomething I've wanted to put into words for a while. I'm delighted that you enjoyed it <3

(snow white:dwarf orgy next?)

OMG, I love this. Lovely language. And I love that he stays a beast and the "princesses" never become civilized.
