The idea of getting swallowed up by an avalanche is super scary to me. I can imagine it would feel like a much more solid version of getting sucked out to sea by rip currents, something I have had the misfortune of experiencing first hand.

A sage choice! I don't recommend getting buried alive in snow, as a general rule.
