My daughter introduced me to Mumford & Sons - we like them very much. I am also a huge fan of The Mountain Goats - the main dude John Darnielle is a brilliant song writer. Anything by them is brilliant but All Hail West Texas and Tallahassee.

Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel is an old album - the band no longer exists but it is also brilliant - the whole thing.

Mountain Goats is great smart, angry, folk, especially their earlier albums like Sunset Tree.

IMnsHO,Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the greatest alt/indie bands of the mid to late 90's. But definitely not for everyone. Might be a bit too "strange" for your tastes.

I'm so thrilled for your new book news.

Music recs (I'm going with "things that are new to me that I replay a lot")

Many of Horror by Biffy Clyro
While We Were Dreaming by Pink Mountaintops
Mine by Taylor Swift
Airplanes by Chase Coy
Misguided Ghosts & The Only Exception by Paramore
Pink Moon, From the Morning, Day is Done, Cello Song & Fruit Tree by Nick Drake
Crossfire by Brandon Flowers

and if you don't already know them, I like The Airborne Toxic Event and Mumford & Sons (entire albums)
