more user bans..

Dec 19, 2007 19:20

i just read in innocence_jihad that a Lj user has been banned without warning and without explanation.

upon further reading, i discovered that 6A/Lj has a terrible better business bureau (BBB) track record. if you read the report, many complaints and issues have been filed against 6A, DBA Lj, but most inquiries were ignored. some were resolved. 6A is not a BBB ( Read more... )

It's not the only one done recently. There's also ij user techno_goddess. She's on lj and has a bl;ogspot devoted to it. Her IP was banned and she has a permanent account. Last I heard the situation wasn't resolved. It has been. Evidently, she turned another LJ over to a troll who was banned.

Honestly, I don't buy the whole "Lolita" thing. It's not even an unsearchable interest. That being said, I don't know this person and have no idea whatsoever of why he/she was suspended ( ... )

OTOH it's entirely possible that the abuse team still hasn't told her what she was suspended for. I once got suspended because they confused me with someone with a similar LJ name, and it took 2 days for them to tell me what I was suspended for, and fix the error. That was long before they had to deal with hundreds and hundreds of people swamping them with flags. It wouldn't surprise me if it's taking them longer than 3 days now, and it really isn't acceptable (IMO) for them to suspend any journal without immediately telling the user why - and telling them in detail, not just sending them something that says "you broke the rules".

This thread from the last post on this matter states the staff position pretty clearly: There have been no interest-based suspensions.

Given what I've read, I hold this whole matter suspect. Until I see something more solid, it doesn't seem reasonable to assume that any user suspended who happens to have a filtered interest was banned BECAUSE of said interest. There are other reasons for suspensions, and I think this may fall under one of them.

As for the BBB, however, it's something to keep in mind once SUP properly takes the reins. If we were still going to have 6A around, I'd plow ahead now with a complaint, but since we're leaving the 6A empire it seems more prudent to look ahead at SUP.

Yeah, I think it is too soon to jump the gun. However, I think regardless of why the user was banned, it would be a good idea to make it a matter of LJ policy to send the banned user a email explaining why they were banned.

Totally off topic, but I think your mod icon is very err... nice? That's not the word I want to use, but I like it. Compared to some community icons I've seen out there, yours is very professional.

Haha, thanks ;] I just wanted it to be clear without taking away from the original design; I was originally just using the OurJournal icon, but then others did as well and it was going to get very confusing ;]

This was mentioned earlier somewhere in here lizzie_borden December 20 2007, 06:59:00 UTC
I don't know how well it would stand up as a "valid" copy (I assume that would depend on who you're using is as justification to), but ljarchive has an application (LJ Archive) that you can download to your computer, and it will sync your posts to your journal (or journalS) daily- along with comments. The nice thing about it is that it's fast, it can handle multiple journals, and it now also has the ability to archive comms and of course, keep all of the comments. Again, you can auto set it to sync up and save updated versions any time you want..

So to any of you who have concerns about losing material through deletion or LJ crashing or anything else, grab it, it's easy to run, and hey, if you're a long term LJer you probably want a copy of your entire journal anyway and there's no time like the present to get one.
