Users being banned for interests?

Dec 19, 2007 00:13

I've just had a rather alarming piece of hearsay pop up on my friends list- apparently users are now being deleted for having those same search interests that we've been investigating here. With the same strings and roots that led to things like "baby grapes" being unsearchable. The word is that users with innocent interests can petition LJ to be ( Read more... )

staff reply, banned interests, debunked, unverified, suspended journals

I'm going to poke any staff possible for feedback; PLEASE do not panic until we have more information confirming this.

(Of course, if this is true, the panic button is on the left.)

If you could put in an edit pointing to marta's reply, it would be mighty helpful in toning down the likely panic people will feel ;]

There have been no interest-based suspensions.

Have there been recent suspensions for other reasons?

Only the reasons that have always been in place.

Thank you. My thought was that if there had been suspensions recently for other reasons, that they might be the source of the rumor.

I've heard of some bannings, but not for interests, for alleged trolling-related offenses, such as creating another account to circumvent a ban, or deliberately creating sockpuppets which they used to troll.

Yeah, it seems as though one of the bannings described here (that of techno_goddess on IJ) is due to sharing a trolling account; supposedly, the reason for the other banning being discussed -- enamours, the OP -- is still unknown.

I certainly don't support many of LiveJournal's actions lately, but it's frustrating when people choose to downplay (or omit entirely) the facts behind a banning in order to pin the blame on LJ. I don't care if you shared the trolling account (silly idea, anyway) and weren't actually responsible for the activity that earned the ban... you shouldn't have opened an account just to troll to begin with. That particular case, IMO, isn't due to poor judgment on LJ's part, and citing it as more proof that LJ sucks just confuses the issue.
