Use of LJ posts in newspaper

Sep 12, 2008 22:12

There's a new post ru_news  that did not find a reflection in main community news . It has some new things as well as very interesting information. Starting September 16th all LJ posts that are being indexed by russian search engine Yandex.RU might be used as addition to articles in Gazeta.RU. And the post says that the only way to exclude yourself from this ( Read more... )

I don't really understand what you mean by "might be used as addition to articles in Gazeta.RU." Does that mean the full text of the posts will appear on Gazeta.RU, whatever that is?

well they promise it's going to be only snippets with link to the LJ post as addition to the article. But as always... SUP announce it to be one thing but in reality... They are claiming that they implementing it with only good intentions for LJ-users - to increase popularity of our journals, like we are writing here to gain fame and readers. :(

Snippets... with a link... You mean like any frikkin' index/search engine in the world? Which to avoid, you already have to check a buried box? And which LJ always told you was unreliable, the only privacy guatantee being a locked post?

This is pretty weak sauce.

Well the idea is that the newspaper is posting article on hmm population of goats on US farms. They use Yandex.RU search engine to search LJ for posts about goats and US farms. Than they post quotes frcyom LJ on the side of the article with links to the LJ posts. The problem that people don't really understand here is that for U.S. LJ users it doesn't really matter since not many people here write on latest political and social issues, on the other hand cyrillic sector is very active. Can you imagine what would happen to your journal if thousands of people get to read your thoughts in newspaper and then come to your LJ to comment and express their opinions... all the trolls spams and anonymous comments... brrrr

Well this project starts tomorrow... we'll see what its going to look like.

Seems like the wording of the Search inclusion option in Privacy Settings was changed for everyone. It now says "Minimize your journal's inclusion in search engine results. Selecting this option also means that your entries will not be publicized at external sites that have content partnership with LiveJournal."

yeah but they forgot to mention that it applies only to new posts since the older ones are already indexed by the search engine.

Seems to me some people need to be reminded that what you post on the Internet in public, is, in fact Public. If you don't want your LiveJournal entries to be read outside of LiveJournal read this.

Sorry, no violation of privacy here. Thanks for playing; come again when you have a better complaint.

i should probably remove the privacy part but it is still violation of copyright - using someones work without their permission.

Can you imagine writing in your little journal some thoughts on farm animals and applications of make up just for giggles and your friends and next day some newspaper posts it for the world to see? Not fun.

P.S. There's a difference between journal being publicly available and used by the third party for financial gains.

Apparently you failed to read Section XIV of the Terms of Service.

And since you seemed to not get it the first time: If I want to write something in my LiveJournal that I do not want to see in tomorrow's newspaper, I'll select "Friends-Only" or "Private". If you choose to post "Public" don't be surprised when it appears elsewhere.

This is hardly a new possibility. Back in January I was wandering around Google looking for silver chipmunk jewlery, when I stumbled across myself quoted in a major London newspaper, here:

Manhattan bloggers' terrorist fearsHow New York and the blogosphere reacted to the pipe explosion

It's the possibility of this sort of thing that makes me not use full names in my journal, and never give the name of my employers in a public entry. I don't mind this sort of thing being quoted, in fact I was rather complimented, but we all need to remember that unless it's a locked post, anything we write can be searched and quoted.

Yes, even in the US, using excerpts from public blogs qualifies as fair use, as it should.

Whatever others have to say, I'm grateful for this tip. Regardless of TOS and copyright/privacy protocols, this is something that users should be told about. Thanks!

well the Yandex search engine is mostly specialized on russian sector of internet and the newspaper is in Russian that's why it wasn't the news for the rest of LJ.
