The animal you call moose is correctly called Elch in German - ah, I see that as you keep adding to the post you're finding that out as well.

And yet moose was the first English word I learned for Elch, because our next door neighbour had a sticker on his door that said (for reasons I don't know) "Don't loose the moose"...

In defence of the Brits I would like to say that generally here most people would I think be able to identify a moose but would just accuse an elk of being a HUGE deer... or possibly a moose.
