I had never heard of this book before, so I'm really glad to be forewarned. Very informative description of the dynamics of white supremacists, as well; I'd never really noticed it before, but now that you've highlighted it, East Asians do seem to be more 'acceptable' to whites. The myth of the high-achieving Chinese immigrants, with their super-student kids who all play violin, is kind of a form of this, even though my own experience shows that any immigrant family is going to try for that type of thing as best they can given their financial resources. It's casting the 'acceptable' non-whites as embracing and excelling at the predominant white culture, based on stereotypical characteristics ("Asians work harder!") that white culture enshrines.

I didn't even need to dig past the first page of Google search results to find debunkings, or at least qualifications, of the Model Minority myth. http://cmhc.utexas.edu/modelminority.html Plus, African immigrants actually have higher educational attainments than the overall U.S. population. http://immigrationpolicy.org/just-facts/african-immigrants-america-demographic-overview So yeah, as ever, race caricatures are just that.

Yech. Never heard of this book specifically, and I'm GLAD. Folks who romanticize the Civil War drive me crazy.

If you need a palate cleanser, I highly recommend the comic book Incognegro by Mat Johnson and Warren Peace. It's about a black reporter who uses his looks to sneak into things like lynchmobs and expose them in the press. It's a dangerous job, and he's ready to retire when he finds out his brother is in jail and in danger of being lynched. It's the One Last Job, and taking it gets him involved not only in a murder mystery, but the KKK as well!

It is harsh, it is funny, and it's just beautifully written. Not sure if you'd be able to get your hands on it overseas, but if you do happen to find it...

You mean crazier? XD Yeah, lost cause revisionism and assorted Confederacy apologia are terrible. That great, doomed, noble army that went on slave raids? Yeah. Sure.

Sounds awesome! I'll keep an eye out for it. It doesn't seem to be out in Korea, but maybe I'll get the chance.

Yeah. Since we grew up in Texas and have a lot of family in Louisiana, I've seen enough 'the South will rise again' bullshit to last me forever. It's like no, STFU, you lost the fucking war A HUNDRED FIFTY YEARS AGO. Move ON.
