LJ Idol Week 7- No True Scotsman

Apr 25, 2014 16:30

Lets start with a brief story, an amusing little anecdote (your mileage may vary) to set the tone. Names have been changed to protect the guilty. I once was sitting in a living room with a woman named Princess Gracielda (if you are gonna make up a name from whole cloth, why not go all the way). The Princess was on the phone with a phone sales ( Read more... )

I especially liked the advice in the last two sentences, also "keep some for where you are, as well as where you want to be." I hope that soon you will be able to buy more socks with the proceeds from acting and writing.

I definitely believe in "fake it 'til you make it", because it's worked for me. It's rough working a job you feel you're better than. (It's equally as rough having to admit that you're not, actually, "better" than said job.) But I've managed to get to where I DO pay my bills doing something I don't hate as much as my desk job. I work a job I created myself. BUT I am also aware that I'm extremely lucky: I'm not doing it to be rich, I'm doing it to be free. I also don't have kids, and I have an extremely supportive husband...as long as my half of the bills get paid, it doesn't matter how I earn it.

I have the luxury of living without in order to make the life I want for myself. Not everyone is so lucky.

ETA: I had no idea Neiman's was Dallas-based.

I'm one of those people who can't do with labels, so I avoid them.

The working poor does sound like the walking dead (and it is, very often!)

I... can't describe myself as 'writer'. I don't know when I'll be able to do that, despite the fact that I write everyday, and I'm actively trying to maintain a weekly internet presence in the form of a blog, and I'm working on a novel and a book of poetry.

I've been thinking about this lately. And I think I might be slowly getting to a place where I can justify 'being' a writer. I'm just not sure I can call myself one just yet :D It needs to stay my little secret for a bit longer.

You're a writer :) You may not be a full-time writer, or a multiply-published writer, but you write, and you're a writer. Keep it secret as long as you need to, but know that it's true :)

Heh. Let's just say it can be part of my secret identity, perhaps? And that makes me feel like a superhero, so it's all good :D

An interesting analysis.

I definitely relate to the writer stuff, I feel I've put in many hours and have the passion, but am definitely not yet (assuming I ever am) developed to anywhere near the level needed to be a professional. But as a state of being, I consider myself a writer.
