Fully agreed that a "single story" of any minority or marginalized group is a problem, and we need more stories showing a greater diversity of narratives expanding the possibilities for characters of these backgrounds and identities. I really get what you're saying and I have been thinking this too. Why do we have death and suffering in our stories? Because we often have to deal with death and suffering.
For some reason, I'm thinking about Bujold's The Warrior's Apprentice when Bothari is killed. So many writers would have killed Elena Visconti and the story would not have been as deeply moving as it was. I'm not sure if I'm saying this right -- can't find good words today.

Which is why I am very uncomfortable with anyone saying that we "shouldn't" write stories in which women suffer (e.g. with the death or suffering of loved ones), that these stories "aren't wanted" or worse, somehow "hurt women," that the author has "suspect motives," and that they just "should have chosen" to write a different (or happier) story
