Remember pmmarcov? She replaced her. And, yes, she crunches the numbers and sells the demographics to advertisers and actively makes deals for advertisers. Pmmarcov even seemed to be selling the LiveJournal folks on how much advertising would invigorate their user base and the users would be EXCITED AND LOVE IT. She had a rough time, especially at first. Read lj_ads from the beginning of the archive (complete with comments from me, I'm sure).
Unless the staff page is really that out of date. There's two on there that have left, I'm pretty sure, who are still up there.
Maybe I can google to see about news articles on any staff changes... as soon as I finish cutting some raw data into an Excel spreadsheet from the current poll. It's fascinating!

Ads also come in the form of one sponsored mood theme and several sponsored layouts, which were introduced in May 2007 with little fuss, I believe, because people were going crazy about the new logged-in homepage. This post explains how to block the sponsored mood icons.
