Repurpose FAQ 233 as "how do I use my livejournal account to log in to another website with OpenID"

Jun 20, 2009 20:37

Based on this proposal, it's fairly clear that we need a better FAQ to help users use LJ as an OpenID provider. So, let's make FAQ 233 more comprehensive, and move it to the ext_sites category. Here's some proposed text:

Q: How do I use my LiveJournal account to log in to another website with OpenID?

I got a little confused at the roles of the sites in the simple explanation.

Summary: OpenID is a decentralized identity system. It allows you to use an account at a particular website (OpenID provider) to log in to any other site that supports OpenID (OpenID consumer), without creating an account on the other site.

I was trying to figure out how to make it simple without being confusing; putting that in does help.

And are those the usual industry terms?

Yes, that's technically accurate.

problem is that LJ is an openID 1.0 site, some sites won't allow LJ openID logins because they don't play nice with openID 2.0.

It was, at one point, noted on /support/ that this was going to be fixed. We don't document temporary situations, such as bugs, in the FAQs, but I can't find any evidence that this is still being worked on.

I'll add this to the list of things we need input from LJ staff on - if it isn't being worked on, I'll put something in the troubleshooting section about it. If it's going to be fixed, we'll just leave it as-is for now, and the support admins can add it back to the /support/ issues box.

According to engineering staff, LJ's issues with OpenID 2.0 have been resolved, so we won't be mentioning any issues in the FAQs. If you're still having trouble using your LJ as an OpenID identity at any particular site, please open a support request so that the problem can be investigated. Thanks!

Done, and also filed https://jira.sup.com/jira/browse/LJSV-656 because /openid/options.bml is not English-stripped.
