OTTOMH, it's the id of the parent comment (if any), for comment threading. That is, if you used addcomment to reply to this comment, you would supply its talkid, and your comment would apply as a reply to mine.

No, you're thinking of ditemid, I think. (Although the same may be true of parenttalkid, using the parent comment ID instead of the post ID. I haven't looked at the code.)

My understanding was that ditemid was as displayed in the url. Parenttalkid may be need to be divided by 256. What is parenttalkdid for the first comment? I've tried both floor(ditemid/256) and 0.

Did you try not passing a parenttalkid at all?
