We’re making a change to the way we've been gathering statistics on LiveJournal and wanted to let you know the plan and details in advance.
Back in January, we
announced that we'd start using Omniture SiteCatalyst as the system that lets us dig deeper into how members and visitors use LiveJournal. Back then, we had only used Omniture's tracking

And yeah, that edit function exists so when they used it to disable comments they could have added a note that said "We are disabling comments as this is an informational post only." How hard is that?
It's the same thing with this post - people are already touchy about the things that LJ has done and is doing and so when they do make a mistake or are not as coherent as they should be, it's easy for people to become even more suspicious that this was done intentionally.
Most of the people that are upset with LJ simply want communication - which is something that LJ/6A has said they are going to improve upon and they haven't. The fact is, 6A/LJ is doing a lot of things wrong and not many things right and proving over and over again that it's moving away from what LJ used to be towards a sanitized, sponsored shit hole.

Don't bother telling me that if I don't like it, I should move - I am. Once my site is up, I'm gone.

Which is actually rather refreshing. It's the first unambiguously honest message I've seen from them in ages.

It doesn't matter why people feel the need to comment. A lot of comments on official posts are always "Yay, new stuff!" and "that's cool; thanks for letting us know." They're making it very clear that they really don't give a damn what their customers think, positive or negative.

Actually, LJ users may have no say in the decision, but they may well have things to say about it, which is what comments are for, as I understand it. There are always asshole/idiot comments, but then there are also well thought out, intelligent, articulate, or just plain funny comments, and off the top of my head, I can imagine that some people might want to wish the new guy luck, or thank Barak for the work he's done, while others may want to say good riddance and OH NOES THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END, but either way, I see no particular reason to actively prevent LJ members from commenting. More to the point, perhaps, is the fact that there's been quite a bit of turmoil in the LJ/6A world over the past few months, and if I were "theljstaff" I'd likely let people bitch and praise and play when it costs me nothing (I have trouble talking to people who don't race sail boats...), rather than ( ... )
