goals and guidelines

As promised, I want to clarify any confusion there may have been about our policies regarding your content on LiveJournal.

Our number one goal is to encourage and promote a free and open community. We will only intervene to the extent needed to avoid the site being used as a vehicle for illegal activities. The policies are simple.

Hopefully it will make the whole LJ system run a bit smoother, yeah?

What about role playing journals, where there is obviously no intent to actually do any illegal activity, but illegal activity may be a part of what the character is? Will a standard "This journal is not a real journal, but a part of roleplaygame," be enough to clarify this? After all, Strikethrough got at least three RP journals based on the fact that the characters' interests and activities were illegal in real life.

No, it won't. A few celebrity RP journals have gotten deleted because they "impersonated" someone, even if the disclaimer was there. This happened before ST though.

That's actually a different situation -- in those cases, if they impersonate someone (even with a disclaimer), and we get a report from the person being impersonated, we'll suspend the journal.

So why weren't all celebrity journals banned? All of the others friended to it and the RP communities, etc. It' was there, clear as day. Also, the person was really upset, because it was done without warning.

I don't like celebrity RP, but I know that would irk the hell out of me.

See, that's at least a start at transperancy. Continue, please, and keep us updated.

I still think you really ought to postpone the paid sale until you've given yourselves time to regain the trust. Or possibly do it near the holidays?

Agreed. Cancel the sale. You'll do better business in 6 months, anyway.

I also wholeheartedly agree with this. While I had been looking forward to the prospect of purchasing a permanent account for some time now, my current doubts are bearing stronger than that 'need'. Being that it's a luxury with a somewhat steep price involved, I'd feel much more confident in my decision were this entire situation resolved and behind us by a month or so.

As it is, chances are I won't be picking up a permanent account 'this time around', and who knows when the opportunity will come again.

Is this what is meant when you said, "Clarifying our policies so that it's easier to understand what kinds of content Six Apart is either unwilling to host or legally unable to host", or is there more to the "unwilling to host" part that has yet to be mentioned?

Nope, that's it.

So if you put, for example, in your profile, "child sexual abuse, pedophila, sex with children" (say you happen to be a victim counsellor), is that go or no go?

Well we'll take the profile as a whole (pulling in the journal if the profile is inconclusive).

For instance, this is bad:

Bio: I like fucking little kids
Interests: child sexual abuse, pedophila, sex with children

This would be fine:

Bio: I work with victims of sexual violence.
Interests: child sexual abuse, pedophila, sex with children

If the interests were all we had to go on, then we'd look at the journal to determine the context/intention.
