Patch release 88.2

Dec 22, 2011 16:20

A patch release has just been put out. It fixes a few of the major problems with expanding threads and other AJAX-y style problems with the new commenting form. We also wanted to let you know about the tickets that have already been filed regarding the commenting form (so you can see if problems you're seeing have already been reported or not) and ( Read more... )

How about you roll back this update and wait until the old style is implemented before bringing it back?

Are you crazy! That is both logical and risks making people happy! At Christmas time no less! Blasphemy!

I just had an even farther out-there idea: Do a permanent roll-back, and make the new form completely optional. That way igrick can have his precious new comment pages without those icky subject lines, and the rest of us won't have to deal with the numerous issues it comes with.

Thanks for the detailed information on the patch.

That said, I'm seeing complaints from people regarding the status of automatic payments on their accounts being switched without their permission, as well as the switching of comment styles on people's journals/comms.

I'd like to see some official statement/acknowledgment of these issues, please; that might go some small way toward making me reconsider my rage toward how this entire release has been handled so far.

Editing, now that I can with this free account that I don't really intend to pay for now, to say that when I say "some small way," I really do mean infinitesimal. The way this release has been handled has -- and I do hate to say this -- irreparably damaged any confidence I have in LJ.

The custom comment disabling thing is already up on the Known Issues list on the Support page. But so far, at least, there's not a word about the autopayments.

As far as I know, automatic payments cannot be turned on for a user, even if they've previously been enrolled in the plan -- we simply don't store the necessary credit card and payment info here at LJ to do so. All transactions are handled by our backend secure credit processor at the time of the transaction. If a person has withdrawn from the plan (or was never enrolled), we just don't have the complete information necessary to put a charge through.

But, with that said, anyone concerned about the status of their account and payments should definitely open a report with our Billing department [http://www.livejournal.com/contact/?dept=billing], as they have full records of when automatic payments have been turned on or off for an account through its whole history, plus the current enrollment status and such. They'll be able to review the history and see what has or hasn't happened for any particular user.

While I have pretty much jumped ship at this stage, I just wanted to drop by and thank you personally for responding to people's concerns and attempting to get some information out there about the changes and what's being worked on. It's really appreciated.

The lack of a Preview button on the new commenting form was reported both in beta and after the release. Since a Preview button isn't easily/quickly possible with the new form, we have made the ability to edit comments available to all account types. If you see a coding error in your comment after posting it, you will be able to edit the comment to fix the issue. Note that comments can be edited by the author up until the point the comment is replied to by another user.

Can we have some clarification on this point, please? Is this intended to be the permanent solution, or is this a stop-gap put in place until you have the time to reinstate the preview button?

LJSV-1980 - No "parent" link on new commenting scheme

In addition to this particular ticket, it is important to be able to link to specific comment threads, without having to view (even collapsed) the comments above in the thread, so that we don't have comments all crushed up at the side of the page ( ... )

As far as I'm aware, all users will retain the ability to edit comments even if a way is found to add a preview functionality back into the commenting form. (As in, we wouldn't take it away at that point, if preview was added back ( ... )

So the solution to not heeding the feedback in beta is to lessen the value of paid accounts?

The oddest thing is that it's a great feature, and one that will surely cause people to think seriously about dropping to Basic, since they don't need a Paid account for it any more.

They're kind of shooting the, selves in the foot with this one.

Look at this pretty subject line... oh wait. moerlin December 22 2011, 22:30:58 UTC
Well, this was more than I expected, but still not enough, LJ. :(

Additional Information
* We will be making an S2 commenting style that mimics the display of the original/previous S1 commenting pages. This new style will retain the ability to use/display comment subject lines. It will also not have the display issue that arises for long threads in the current S2 customized comment pages, where long threads are very 'squished' (a few words per line, etc) -- threads will display as they did in the previous commenting scheme. We are aiming to have this available within a few weeks.

This will be available for basic/plus accounts as well, yes?

I have not heard any discussion that this would be limited by account type in any way, no -- so while I'll try to get a 'for sure' answer from the right people, as far as I know, it would be available to everyone and all comms.

Thanks for giving us what information you have as promptly as you can. I'm angry with LJ, but I recognise that you personally are probably having a crap week now too. Luck.

It absolutely should not be limited (just as this release should not have been rolled out) because forcing people to pay to simply be able to use the site when you claim to be free is complete bullshit.

Thank you for keeping us informed and making efforts to offer an alternative to what has become an enormous problem for many users.

Now it's just on you guys to make those of us who have been affected by the problems still want to stay here.

This, so hard. I hope LJ gets a blow from losing people over this. I may or may not renew my paid account when it runs out unless they fix these problems. It's like they can't get a grip on the fact that they're serving a paying customer base.
