Urban Nature Walk

This morning, I went to Rice Reservation & Lyman Pond in Westwood with urbpan and a couple others on another Urban Nature Walk. We met behind the high school, and after rambling about in the woods and stumbling upon a pair of snapping turtles laying their eggs, we finally found our way to the pond where there was a great blue heron rookery. I've seen nests before, but never with herons (and babies!) in them.

Oooooh, such wonderful pics! I love the turtles so much and the heron in its nest is fabulous! I adore herons. Thank you for sharing.

And, I missed the top pic at first, for some reason. Hooooow amazing!

It was very cool! It took us a while to find a way in to a spot from which we could get a good view, but it was worth it.

That first shot of the herons' rookery is amazing. It seems so otherworldly, or prehistoric.

You can really believe they're descended from dinosaurs. They even sound like dinos, especially the babies!
