I hear a lot of criticism of online social communities, but I have to say that as a sometimes shy person, the ones I use have helped me to get to know some people better that I see in person occasionally but have sometimes not had the nerve to talk to... and reconnect with old friends who are no longer nearby.
I like FB for keeping up with friends & family who aren't on LJ, and for posting short bits. LJ is so much better for thoughtful discussion and sharing things that take longer than a few seconds to digest. :)

I think it's all in how you use them. The critics only see the silliness that makes the news, not the actual human connections made.
