The trick with the Nikon is to watch the lens jockey back and forth as the camera tries different focal points, and then half-depress the shoot button to lock the focus when it's looking at what you want it to be looking at. I took surprisingly good macros with bokeh with my little Nikon Coolpix, but it did take me a while to get used to working with the autofocus to catch exactly what I wanted.
