something about memory palaces as a mnemonic technique, which I need to read up on.

Try Moonwalking with Einstein. It's a lot about memory palaces.

Also, the Baskerville episode of "Sherlock" has him using his memory palace [clip]. Someone wrote about it here (see also the comments).

It all sounds terribly woo-woo, but I'll check it out nonetheless. (It counts as writing research as well as personal improvement, so there's that.)

It sounds so wonderful. Worth all the driving and the expense just to listen to Pat Wrede talk about writing, and you had the rest of the con as well. Too excellent!

Not just talk about writing, but also dismember my query to its component atoms. Just having somebody ask the right questions was incredibly helpful, even if it did take until the drive home for me to come up with some of the right answers.
