I need some help with a school project. Does anyone have ideas about topics for debate that would be appropriate for 5th graders? I want them to get some practice with the debate format, and it will be a good way to fill some time next week. Any ideas are great, give me what you've got. Thanks!

Hi Liz,
Assuming you wish to stay away from anything too political or potentially upsetting to parents ... hm, non-topical debate topics are kind of hard.

You could go with more science- or history-oriented debates.

Downfall of the dinosaurs: Meteor strike or climate changes?

Oh, you could do Extraterrestrial life: Does it exist or not?

kind of general but:

single-sex vs. co-ed schools? or one teacher vs. multiple teachers in a school day?

a friend of mine had to do project involving asking kids those questions, so i figured they might work...

I like that idea, but it might be frustrating for them to discuss something like that that they have no control over. Maybe if we did it as a whole class. Thank you!
