Gah, I hate feeling so damn inadequate in school. Got a very bad grade in JOU4004, but at least I wasn't the only one. I got the lowest grade I'd received since Microecon back last Fall, but another friend got the lowest grade since their freshman year. Ugh ( Read more... )

Song for the night: Parents just don't understand.

I think the UF had some serious issues with grade inflation last spring/summer, and now we're paying for it through the nose. If everyone has a 10.0, there's no way for scouts to see who actually knows their stuff so they look at schools other than UF. I know one teacher last year gave something like 60% A's, 30% B's, and the rest were scattered. So the university felt it had to toughen up.

My accounting class is really getting screwed because our teacher is the dean of the school of accounting. Why? Everyone else was busy or gone. So this man, who has taught at Stanford and [someother Ivy league school] and has only taught masters students for the last half century is now teaching Intro to Accounting. And he's a big supporter of getting rid of grade inflation. So there's a very real possibility that I shall be dropping that class. :-/

Yeah, JOU4004 is taught by the Dean of Journalism, but he's a cool guy. Just gave a super hard test.

It's so freakin' retarded. I hate that I'm doing good work and not getting anything back for it. I'm not so sure I can handle two more years of constantly getting told that I'm no good.

I can totally sympathize with the whole being an average student thing. It's that way for me too. The only consequence for me that would be worse than yours is that my parents would force me to come home if I lose Bright Futures. Ugh. It sucks to come from a small town where you are always above average and then come here and see that we're just average.

*sigh* All my life I've been the smart kid. The one who always got A's, always knew the answers, always knew what she was doing.

Here, I can barely keep my head above water. I'm not so sure I'll be able to keep my sanity if this keeps up for the next two years.

This semester, I think I'm going to get my first non-A grade since third grade. Seriously. I haven't decided if I'll be relieved or heartbroken. Since I'm changing my major to math--definitely not an easy subject, but my absolute favorite--I see more non-A grades in my future. Ah, well. Such is life. Good luck!

My first semester here at UF (technically a summer semester), I came THIS close to getting a C (I'd never even gotten a B, so that would have been...egads!) I figured it was just because it was a math course.

Then Fall 2003 I got an A, a C+, a C and had to withdraw from another course because it was very likely I would come away with a D.

UF is the flagship school of the state and suppposedly the 'harvard of the south' but, good grief. It's killing me.

Honestly, I really don't think it's that you're "average". Liddy and I have talked about this issue a LOT because of my SUCKcess here at UF so far. Not to say there aren't some insanely smart, smarter-than-us kids here, because there definitely are, but I think what it is for a lot of kids is that they're really trained to be students and spit back information to do well on tests ( ... )

Amen. I know what I'm doing in my classes, but I can't prove it on my tests. Other kids can. I call them names under my breath, take my bad grade, and move on. Very frustrating.

Yeah I do that too, except the names aren't so much under my breath. :-p
