Pure instinct! All the work I've done with him has been stuff like recall and not being scared of things - it's not like I'm in a position to actually USE a hunting dog. It's very cool to know he could have been one though.
way to go squish! puppy has pointed a few times, but i suspect if he ever was hot on the trail of a bird, he'd try to chase it down and bark at it if it flew away. he barks at the squirrels who sit on the power lines above him.
I don't really have enough hands to manage a camera and two dogs at once very well. I should remember to bring it with me a bit more often, though. Sorry!
He's always been excited by them. The first one he saw, he didn't point - well, not properly, though he indicated its presence very clearly by bouncing up and down yapping hysterically. But he did this one almost textbook style, apart from that he should, technically, have waited for me to tell him to flush.
He's not often scared by natural outdoor things. He's scared of stuff like unexpected plastic bags and other dogs, mostly.

I know you talk about him being a nervous dog, but pheasants can be intimidating! Good for him!
