I think I've reached that state of caffeine-frenzied sleeplessness where random telepathic impulses from the other side of the Void are sleeting into my brain. This stuff is just writing itself now.

That's always been the approach that I've taken to writing fanfic. It doesn't work as well with thesis, unfortunately...
