odd...that's the second reminder today that cats are predators.

One of the strays that hangs out in my neighbor's back yard caught a grackle today and was boisterously playing with it outside my kitchen window. It was still alive, but just barely (the bird, not the cat). It was both fun and slightly disturbing to watch.

Yes. There are sound physical reasons why cats kill things gradually (it's all about not being damaged themselves) but it is disturbing to watch.

ah well, at least this bird was dead and defrosted already...

I never thought of it before, but that makes sense. Although someone should mention it to this stray, he managed to get bit...
He did look like he was having a blast though. As does Cassie.

They have to get their faces very close in for the killing bite - something like a rat or mouse could do a lot of damage if there was much fight left in it at that point.

Hope the stray's OK.

Well they're only a few days short of four weeks now... I thought they were looking good but I have no frame of reference for this.

they're certainly enjoying life and playing a lot though. :)

The kittens or the chickens?

(Try saying that five times really fast!)

she'll probably eat it when she's completely finished playing with it.

If I go by Giddy and Julius...they take a VEry long time to play with the mice they kill...lol

Gives me time to take it away from them so they can't eat it...I absolutely HATE finding bloody mouse parts in my bed, which is the ONly place they'll eat it!

the kittens are, of course, very cute still...also, she's probrably teaching them some of the basic points of hunting...:D

Oh yes! She was waggling it in front of Blade at one point and getting him to pounce it. And she kept throwing it in the air.

LOL

Be careful though. At some point she'll probably bring it to you and present it to you.

You have to be careful with this with a cat. We always used to pet and praise the cat for being such a good hunter. And then we would throw away the body when they weren't looking.

Cats do this because they think that they are providing food for you, while at the same time protecting you.

I wonder if she'd still do that when I gave her the chicks to start with?

She does kill things - moths - but those are a bit small to bring to anyone so she just eats 'em.

Oh, the chicks were already dead and frozen when I bought them - murdered by the egg industry, in fact.

they're just healthier and more fun for cats than cans and kibble.
