OKAY THERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN TRY TO GET IT TO WORK! DO NOT FEAR.
First of all, check to make sure your computer satisfies the requirements (that was my problem when I first bought my game because I was like "OMG SIMS YAY :D" and didn't give a flying fig about whether my computer could handle it or not). You can just google that.
I'm guessing you only have The Sims 3 and no other expansion packs installed? That really makes a difference.
Oh, my computer can handle the Sims 3 80x over if it wanted to; this is a brand spanking new computer. I've had it since May.
And no, I don't have any expansion packs.
I've updated all my computer system things my Windows Live Updater has told me to and re booted everything about three times. It still will let me create-a-sim and then crash once I load them into a house.
Make sure the game itself is updated, too. If your game isn't updated, it literally can't work. When you open the launcher, in the bottom left, I believe, it should say "updates."
A lot of people had the crashing problem (and still do), and a lot of the time it's Windows. It basically sees The Sims 3 as "bad memory", but it's not BAD. It's just a lot, and our computer's are like "WOAH HOLY SHIT THIS IS A LOT OF MEMORY, IT CAN'T BE GOOD!"
But it is.
So, follow that tutorial and see if it helps. I helped one of my friends do it and she said her game stopped crashing, too. I wish I'd found it sooner, because I lost a game I was two generations into, but now that I know it works, I'm letting everyone know.
Just make sure about this: But my memory is good. Further research led me to DEP (Microsoft's Data execution prevention). DON'T TURN IT OFF! I did this and big mistake!!! Go into the setting and turn it on for all programs except the ones that you can add to the list and add TS3.EXE to it. If you get

Every time I load it, I can create a Sim and then the minute I go to move them into a house, GAME CRASHES.

If it STILL crashes, try this.

And why not? Jude and Story make them pretty enough.
I laughed so much when you referenced Jude's untimely demise. XD

I think they make lovely little gingers. I was almost disappointed when their first baby was a blond, but they have more than made up for redheads.
It's funny because almost all their intendeds have blue/magenta/some other crazy color hair.
HE LEGIT JUST FIXED THE BROKEN TELEVISION IN THEIR HOUSE WHEN I WAS PLAYING YESTERDAY AND NOTHING BAD HAPPENED.
I wish memories carried over when you upload a sim, that way Jude could tell his children about it. "And that's why you don't break the tv..."

Okay, this is a short comment because I have two more updates to read from you so . . . yes!
