Sounds like fun. I need to find some good hiking spots down here. I just worry about Erik and rattlesnakes. Because I know that I'm smart enough not to bother them and I'm fairly sure that Alan would heed my (and the snake's if we ran into one) warnings but I think that Erik is still too little and too curious. In a few more years...hopefully...
I picked up the Foghorn Outdoors Guide to New England Hiking, it looks like they make one for California hiking as well. I haven't tried any of the trails they mention yet, other than the ones I had already been on, but judging from reading the descriptions of those trails I'd say the New England one is pretty accurate. There's a section on the beginning of the book that lists the top 10 hikes for all sorts of things (foliage, summit views, etc.), and they also list a top 10 of hikes for families with children. Might be worth checking out...the New England one has hikes varying from what basically amounts to walks in the park to more rigorous mountain climbing.
