Killing Hitler, Old Friends, My Icons Suck

Aug 28, 2011 20:42

Lots to cover, forgive me if I ramble.

So, I've seen Let's Kill Hitler twice now (mike_mccall was out at a LARP when I watched it the first time so I watched it again - utterly enjoying his reactions) and I've read a lot of other people's reactions, and I have a few observations I want to get down.

not very spoiler-y SPOILERS! )

homestuck, random thoughts, "real" life, my friends, squeeing, reaction post, river song kicks ass, doctor who, icons

I actually quite liked the fact that Hitler turned out to be pretty tangential. I think that attempting to tackle Hitler and the Holocaust in any prominent and serious way would have been almost guaranteed to end up wince-worthy in some fashion or another, but as much as putting Hitler in the cupboard and stuff was played for laughs, I don't think they trivialized anything, either. (Matt Smith gets credit there, too; the looks the Doctor gives the man just ooze disgust in the most eloquent possible way.)

And you know what? I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THIS.

Me, either. My attitude is, as long as it works, it works. And stuff that seems like it shouldn't work but does anyway just impresses me more. Moffat is really quite good at that. And he really does pull that off with River's identity here. Hell, I was certain it was River pulling up in that car before we saw her. And somehow I still missed the fact that it actually was River! Keeping us too stunned to go to the fridge is exactly what he does. That's extremely well ( ... )

She takes an established character back to the very beginning of her arc; a callow youth in a mature body: the precise opposite of Eleven.

Yessss. Noteworthy. Believable.

Yes, Alex Kingston is amazing.

I think that we've now been given a clue that it isn't River who (seemingly) kills the future Doctor in 2011. Because that would have been in her own past (remembering that the later it is for the Doctor the earlier it is for River), and if she thought that she had succeeded in killing him then why would she try to kill him now?

I had a nice, neat response started. Then it grew. And grew. And grew. And became its own post. Bottom line, "Let's Not Kill Rory This Time" was... okay. Not great, not "Love and Monsters", just... okay.

OK, I loved Lets Kill Hitler. It was nice frantic thrill ride, with good twists and turns and as you pointed out phenomenal acting. The thing that really struck me was the idea of what is a persons responsibility against evil and at what point does justice become vengeance and at what point does that make us evil? I enjoyed that enough to ignore the plot holes that always happen when you inject a character where they weren't before. I actually laughed when Mel's turned out to be River because that was who I expected when the car drove up in the field.

I need to reorganize my icons, get rid of some old ones so that I can pick up some for new interests.
