Food. Water. Shelter. Health care. Freedom from persicution. A government that does not in some way attept to provide equal access to all of the above is NO GOVERNMENT. "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness", remember?
Oh, the irony, it burns.
The really sad thing is that I think most people realize that the American health care system (if we can legitimately call it a system--don't get me started) needs to be changed, desperately. But now that we've got this massive financial crisis, there's a very serious question of just where the money's going to come from to make the changes. So near, and yet so far...
America, if memory serves, actually already spends more per capita on health care than any other industrialized Western nation; it just gets such a staggeringly bad return on its investment. Arguably, nationalizing the system would actually save America money.
It probably does and there's no doubt that it would. But given the way the system (if we deign to call it that--"meleé" would be a better word) works, changing it would require a phenomenal amount of restructuring, reorganizing, probably new governmental offices, etc. None of that is cheap, and there are plenty of people who firmly believe that changing anything is an absolutely terrible idea, all evidence to the contrary. Regardless, right now, we're in more than a bit of financial doo-doo, so it may yet remain immpractical, or even impossible, to make the necessary changes, even if you got everyone to agree on what they should be. (And hey, good luck with that!)
Out of curiosity, what specific irony are you reffering to? A Canadian quoting the bill of rights at you? Or the irony in the phrase itself? (Don't get me STARTED on 'give me your poor....')
I admire the core ideals of America - honestly a bit more than I admire ours, on paper. But when it comes to putting them into practice... yeah. Individual Americans I love dearly. (Like you!! ♥) America as a country and a culture kinda makes me sad, and as a government makes me psychotic.
And the extent that government has an effect on ours makes me sick. And terrified.

...wow. Something I've noticed is that everytime a sentence gets added, it changes the meaning of all the previous sentences. Linguisticly fascinating - if a fairly well-documented phenominon.
(Also, the closest book you have to hand the Bible??. Holy unlikely, Batman!)
Look, I'm sorry, I promised myself I wouldn't get political here, because some people must be rightfully sick of it
Bah. If you're sick of taking part in the way a civilization runs itself, especially if it's your own civilization and you have a say in it, then I don't see much reason to pay attention to you. Not, y'know, you specifically, but a generalized 'you'.
As for 'peace, order and good government', well... two out of three's not bad?

What can I say, I sympathise with Australians and Kiwis and Brits and Finns and Germans and whatnot (I apologise to everybody else relagated to whatnot) on my flist who must be getting sick to death of something that really only marginally affects them and they ALSO have no say over.

*laughs* Well, yeah, goes without saying, but thank you. Stupid fucking Enlgish. BE MORE DECLENSION-Y! XD

Yeah, but which two? And by my count we're doing shitty at all three... (Having a high school hostage situation in one's city does rattle the cage a wee bit.)
If only I was able to appreciate the luxury of free health care. A half-hour office visit to my general practitioner is $85 without insurance. Before WalMart started its deal of cheap generic meds, I had to pay $75 for 90 pills of my antidepressant. That price tag will make me more depressed.
The American health care system is completely fucked up. I don't toss the F-bomb around lightly, so you know the situation is serious.
Will you be on the computernets and Yahell at home soon? I miss chatting with Teh Liza. I'll probably take a nap right now, but I plan to be online this evening.

Trust me, if there was any way I could help my friends not blessed with our health system, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
