Haha, maybe he'll get better as the book progresses. I'm only on page 80 or something ...

That first book sounds like it falls into the category of navel-gazing novels by pretentious, self-regarding men who somehow try to cover up their blatant sexism with the supposed ~literariness of their work, haha. I've read novels that feature all the same issues you mentioned around a different premise!

What a great description, that's exactly what this book was like! The author does look like a terribly pretentious old white dude. He's being lauded as one of the great authors of contemporary Dutch literature, but I don't feel too inclined to pick up another one of his books.
