The Mystery of Motivation

So I spent November in this kind of frenzy, really; writing everyday, (almost) always making daily wordcount, rushing towards my goal... It was great. I was WRITING. I was CREATING SOMETHING. I was PRODUCTIVE ( Read more... )

I have this same problem every year. I think it's the magic of the deadline. Without that, it's too easy to get bogged down in doubt.

You can do it! Just try to do a little every day - as long as you're moving in the right direction, you'll get to your destination eventually.

For me, I think it's the collective energy of so many people suffering along with us in November, but still making it. I know that's what pushed me-- not just the connection with supportive people, but supportive people who at the same place I am, kinda. And then the nagging thought, oh, geez, how am I going to show my face if I'm cheering/encouraging everyone and not following it myself?

I just shared this on twitter and found it pretty interesting. Perhaps it might help? Always Your Very First Step…Anywhere On the Journey! http://bit.ly/79lcWx

Thanks ladies! I think I may have problems with both. NaNo has such a magical deadline, and there are thousands of us trying to reach it, commiserating, cheering each other on, etc etc etc. It's like I've got a hundred-thousand people on my team. And then November ends and (almost) everyone stops writing and I look around all confused going... "Wait, I'm still writing. Where's my team?"

Bottom-line is that I need to work out a way where I can be self-motivated to sit down and be productive. I'm still working on it. ;)

Thanks for the link, Missy-J!* I appreciate it!

(*I'm just going to try out a number of random, weird nicknames for you until I find one I like for your real name. Feel free to discourage me.) ;) :P
