I've heard of people who want to visit the highest peak of each state. (And some who would be happy visiting only the highest peak in every state in the continental US so they can get out of dealing with Alaska I presume.) And I used to read the blog of a guy who decided to travel to every single country.

I have 'soft' goals of visiting all the penguin exhibits in the world, as well as seeing all the penguin species in the wild. I believe I have seen all the penguin exhibits in Texas, and I've seen one species in the wild, so I have no illusions that I'll actually accomplish these goals! Especially considering I've lived in CA now for 7 months, within driving distance of at least 3 penguin exhibits, and I've only seen 1 of the them!

It's a fun goal. And you live there--of course you think you'll have plenty of opportunity.

I'm remembering an ex-coworker with the goal of visiting all the Presidential libraries.

Oh, book recommendations. Can't get more Scottish than Robert Burns. Get a book of Burns poetry and you will have a rather complete snapshot of Scottish life in the mid to late 18th century. For Ireland, pick up a book of Irish folk or fairy tales, as they have deep roots in the mythical. You'll see a lot of Finn McCool stories, plus fairies, trolls, leprechauns, etc. Iceland is big on the sagas--semi-historical, semi-mythical stories.
