So if anyone's spoken to me for ...oh, about five minutes, they've probably found out that I'm doing my honours paper on comic books.

Specifically, what I am doing is LGBT issues and superheroes.

THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN.  I have some ideas about which titles to read but the superhero thing is vast and I am babyreader.  So!  What I am after is ( Read more... )

Do you want gender/fear of emasculation stuff as well or only stuff directly related to LGBT? I only ask because when I did my comic booko project I did dip into the 'fear of being seen as unmanly' and its possible ties to 'fear of being gay', as well as just a general overview of how gender could tie into sexuality but IDK if that is within your scope or not!

Actually that stuff would be seriously cool. Even if I don't use it, it would be very interesting to read. ♥

I seeeldom read superhero books, but the first character that springs to mind is Marvel's Angel/Archangel. I don't know when they started writing him as homosexual, but it is ever so lightly touched on in the 1602 series.

While I don't usually read the X-books, I'm pretty certain that Angel/Archangel's implied homosexuality is limited to the 1602 story...?

From what I remember, though, in the main continuity there have been gay X-Men like second-stringer Northstar and one of the trainees, Anole (I think?).

Yah, it's Anole!

The one series I've actually read in comic format that deals with that is Young Avengers. Other than that, I really have no clue.

I've only ever read one issue of a comi in my life that wasn't Watchmen, but it's turned out to actually possibly be relevant! The listing on that site for Apollo and the Midnighter is outdated, cause the issue of The Authority that I read involved them getting married to each other. So I think it's safe to say they're well out of the realms of subtext now XD

Hey, Midnighter is the sub in that text.

...Might make a note of lesbian cops, since the only two prominent female cops that i know of in DC (Sawyer and Montoya) are both gay.
