I think this is such a good idea. I know quite a few people are put off from joining the union thinking that it comes across as a bit too militant, so doing an event catering for families and these types of people is fantastic. It's good to see some well-known reds getting involved too, especially the ex-players. Everyone who can make it should go!

I wasnt going to say anything but I just couldnt let this go.
I understand that your club is being run by two individuals who don’t have the money or know how to run a business and are destroying your club. I feel bad for all the loyal fans but this continual protest of the owners has an increasing anti-American feel that doesn’t sit well with me. The whole “yanks” thing is offensive but fine it’s a simple saying but the burning of the American flag and now this “Our Independence Day” protest is too much. Your club was sold fairly to theses to guys not America. America did nothing to Liverpool FC. It is not America’s fault that you sold your club to bad owners. The 4th of July is Independence Day for a nation of 307,006,550 people. For LFC fans to try and twist it into some protest is as deluded, sickening and as offensive as burning the US flag.

At the end of the day this rally is an attempt to gain support and publicity for the supporter ownership proposal with Share Liverpool and SOS. Before the whole independence day idea came up this was set to be just another protest which would probably have involved the same old people and been ignored by the press.

I think July 4th was chosen as the date for the rally at first simply because it was one of the only weekend days this summer when there wasn't a world cup match so there wouldn't be a risk of people missing it to watch a match and so that the press wouldn't ignore it in favour of reporting on the tournament.

When people realised the significance of the date it made sense to make the most of the coincidence and give it a bit of a theme - after all the whole point of it is to try and get "independence" from the owners. Nobody's saying it's comparable to the real independence day at all. Giving it a big theme like this has clearly had a positive effect because looking at the people lined up to make appearances on the day ( ... )

It's great to think of it in a harmless way, but after burning the flag and the further actions that are associating all Americans with the two owners (no matter how little the amount of people who are doing this are, they're still part of the SOS who are supposed to 'represent' the Liverpool fans), I kinda find it hard to believe that the 4th of July was just a coincidence ( ... )
