Letter to Dog Owners

Maybe you're not like my neighbors.  They're fine people, decent people.  However, their two poodles are currently gated on the front porch of their house and barking at everything that goes by.  The constant noise pollution is not welcome.  I will remember this if I ever want to have a loud party or run a saw at 5:30am.  Consideration gets ( Read more... )

Amen.

I do not quite understand why people have dogs and cats as pets. I can see that they often love those pets, but why intentionally go out and find a nonhuman to come and live in your house and make messes they will never learn to clean up, and eat you out of house and home, and make noise and etc. etc. etc.

I theorize that the reason is loneliness. We all need connection and when people don't have enough satisfying human relationships, pets can fill in the limbic gap...

yikes. let's dump on people who have canine companions and feel superior to them. really? i grew up in a house where pets were strictly forbidden and, no, human relationships are not the be-all and end-all. i kind of feel sorry for anyone who deprives themselves of the joy that is possible with having a canine best pal. their capacity for love and caring is unparalleled and unconditional. btw, human children make messes and noise and eat tons of food but they fail miserably at providing the comfort and assistance of service dogs or being a first responder in an emergency. why am i even bothering?

I have grown more fond of dogs in the last couple of years but I still don’t want to have one living with me. They are a lot of work. I have seriously been thinking about getting a feline companion… But it will be a while before I make that decision.
