The Problem with Democracy: We are Horny, Greedy and Cruel

Democracy is based on the belief that people are more good than bad, that we are more curious than controlling, more playful than violent, and more kind than selfish.  I am not so sure anymore.  If the ways of a democratic society are based on the common denominator, and humans at base are horny, greedy and cruel, then society will be the same.

A good friend of mine just pointed out that really I'm describing MEN, who just happen to have been in power all this time in part because of these characteristics. Happy to read this morning that a record number of women are running for congress.

It would indeed be interesting to see what the world would look like with a lot more women running things. We are about to find that out here on Long Island, where several women will be sworn in to leadership positions January 1st. Unfortunately, they are still part of the political machine, but we shall see.
